Workshop Descriptions

All workshops listed are a full day (6 hours), and many can be combined into a two day experience, call for more information

  1. Basic Hand Applique:

This is always a good place to start. Students learn the basics of the starch turned applique method, and setting up a new applique block without having to mark the background. Then in the afternoon we will go into sharper points, vines, and circles. The stitch taught is the invisible tack stitch for applique. Two pattern choices for this class are available: The Singing Bird or Wild Roses and Remembrance. Patterns are provided for a small charge per student of $5. If a student would like to take the class, but has a different pattern they are interested in working on, they are welcome to bring it with them, along with the fabric of their choice for the project. See the recommended supply list for this class.

  2. Ribbon Roses, Silk Ribbon embellishments, and Basic Embroidery stitches:

This is a fun and yet "romantic" look in which wired ribbon is shaped into roses and rose buds, and appliqued in place. Silk ribbon embroidery embellishment is taught in the afternoon. Kits will be available for purchase the day of the class, and will contain a piece of background fabric on which to work, wired ribbon for a rose and leaves, an assortment of 4mm silk ribbon, needles, and floss. The kit makes it easy, as no prior preparation will be required. Additional items such as marking pencils, hoops, and scissors will be available for purchase, or students may bring in these items from home.

  3. Inking for Realism for Applique:

This is truly a "go beyond the basics class." Using both Tsukineko inks and Pigma brand marking pens, students will learn shading for realism in flowers and leaves and vases, and the basics for writing on a block. In the afternoon we will continue with eyes and faces. During the class students are able to use the teacher's Tsukineko inks and applicators at no additional charge. Pigma pens and inks will be available for purchase the day of the workshop. See the recommended supply list for this class for other materials.

  4. Appliqued Landscapes:

This is a class for students who love the artistic look of a landscape painting, and want to learn how to make it from fabric. It is far easier than it looks! You may choose to bring in a photograph and make your own landscape, or use the instructor's pattern. These small pieces usually can be completed within a few days, and are suitable for framing. See the recommended supply lists.
